Maintaining a library of software on floppy disk can be a REAL HEADACHE and
that is why DISK Rak was created! Everyone involved with computers KNOWS
that one of the hardest things to do with one is to keep track of your
software. A hard drive is a blessing, but somewhere down the road, your are
going to have to OFF-LOAD some of this stuff to make room for even more and to
protect your investment. If your are one of the majority, then that OFF-LOAD
ends up on those comparably 'small' diskettes that seem to be everywhere!
Managing this mass of software can be both time consuming and just plane out
right BORING! Most individuals will not try to properly label or classify the
software simply because of the time it can take. When it came time to find
this software, well, you know the story probably as well as I do....
WHY DISK Rak?
I had this problem and don't mind admitting it! But when something becomes a
real headache to me, there comes a time when I have to do something about it.
So I searched the BBS's and the software houses for that special program that
would professionally label my diskettes. I mean, there is just nothing worse
to look at than trays of diskettes with 'hand writing' all over them! Most of
the time I found I couldn't even READ MY OWN handwriting. You have to admit
that one of the NICE things about commercial software is how BEAUTIFUL that
disk looks sitting in your tray with that colorful label. I would always
place them in the front of my disk tray so company would think I was
organized.. But! I couldn't find anything that would give my trays that
'professional', well managed look. Well, I did , but I didn't want to keep
supporting the people that wrote it by having to BUY their SPECIAL label
stock to keep it going, nor did I want to attend several 'SEMINARS' to learn
"how to operate" it every time I used it either. I believe in the philosophy
of " if it doesn't work, THEN read the instructions!" What I wanted was just
a simple 'load and go' type of package that did nearly everything except load
up the disk labels and stick 'em on the disk! I wanted it to be strict in
what it was intended to do, but I wanted it to be at MY command also. I hate
boring 'black & white' screens, leave that to the government workers. Now,
the 'hand writing' on the disks was bad enough, but I needed the software to
let me identify and classify the disks and software so that I could find it
easily at a later time, perhaps a 'category' and 'subject' would be nice. If
I could place a comment on the label and maybe give it a TITLE then I knew I
had something!
But! WAIT A MINUTE...
SO WHAT if the disks WERE all labeled AND had information on them that was
readable! I still was going to have to FLIP through the flipping things to
find what I was looking for .... Hmmmmm -> Guess it's gonna need to print me
out an INDEX report now, so I can look through a SORTED index to find what I
want. Yep! That would work, but I knew that meant maintaining a database now,
so why not make a few more reports to help me find my stuff even faster! One
other ... little ... thing, it needed to print labels for both the 5-1/4" disk
and the 3.5" disk and do it on labels that I could buy anywhere. Yea........
you guessed it, I couldn't find the software so I wrote it myself!
That's WHY DISK Rak!

Update
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10/21/90 v3.04
-Added a 'Video Write Toggle ON/OFF' menu selection to the 'Setup' menu.
This will enable users with CGA monitors that are susceptible to 'SNOW'
during direct video writes to toggle the program to use only BIOS writes.
This has the disadvantage of 'slower' screen writes.
-Further Optimized coding for smaller program size and faster execution.
10/10/90 v3.03
-Corrected error in 'bytes used' and 'bytes free' quantity.
-Problem in labels and record info not printing in 'thumb
thru rak' facility corrected.
-Enhancements-
-Improved database routines for smaller data files.
-No longer are you able to save a cataloging without having entered
a disk # and disk tray #.
-Added "Summary cataloging/NO FILES AVAILABLE" string to label print-
out for 'summary' catalogings. This will appear in the
--- CONTENTS --- area of appropriate labels. Signifies that this
disk was cataloged by summary.
-Improved error checking.
-Minor text positioning changes in label printouts for aesthetic reasons.

1> The menu items for Avery 4140 & 4141 were reversed in the menu.
This has been corrected.
2> If you were using a label other than 'standard' label, then the
next diskette no would not increment to the next disk number,
